Prof. TAI Chung Pui (戴忠沛) is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), serving within the Academic Unit of Language and Literacy Education. He is a prominent expert in multilingualism and socio-educational integration. Professor Tai’s extensive research portfolio uniquely bridges language education with minority studies and historical linguistics. Recently, he has been leading the flagship study “Landscape Research and Multiple Case Study of Non-Chinese Speaking Students in Primary and Secondary Schools in Hong Kong,” backed by the C-for-Chinese@JC 2.0 Project for the 2025/26 academic year. By examining the institutional realities of local schools alongside their enrolled non-Chinese-speaking (NCS) cohorts, this study provides critical data that significantly enriches the structural understanding of the broader linguistic and educational landscape of multicultural students across Hong Kong. In the realm of historical and regional linguistics, a major highlight of Professor Tai's research is his pioneering, comprehensive, and systematic bibliographical survey describing the evolution—from birth to extinction—of the Latin scripts of the Taiwan Plains Austronesians (indigenous peoples of Taiwan), marking the first study of its kind in the field. Furthermore, his rigorous examination of Chinese textbooks in Hong Kong across the 20th and 21st centuries culminated in a highly regarded series of public lectures delivered between 2021 and 2024. These included the Knowledge Exchange Seminars “Changes in the Hong Kong Chinese Curriculum” and “The Evolution of Chinese Education in Hong Kong from the Perspective of Textbooks.” His public lecture, “Chinese textbooks in Hong Kong in the 20th and 21st centuries (20 與 21 世紀的香港中文教科書),” gained widespread public recognition when it was selected by RTHK Radio 1 to broadcast on the prominent educational programme “University Knowledge Platform (大學堂)” on May 26 and June 2, 2024. Beyond local pedagogy, he is an expert in ethnic minority languages and historical manuscripts in the Chinese mainland, specializing in Zhuang and Tangut studies.
