Professor CHEUNG Wai Ming (張慧明) is an Associate Professor in the Academic Unit of Language and Literacy Education within the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). A recognized expert in Chinese language and literature education, curriculum design, and teacher development, her teaching and research expertise spans pedagogy in teaching Chinese Language, curriculum leadership, reading literacy, word acquisition, creative writing, gifted education, bilingual education, and the interface between rehabilitation and education using theoretical frameworks like phenomenography and Learning Study. She actively collaborates with the local education sector through university-school partnerships and school-based curriculum development. Professor Cheung received the Faculty Knowledge Exchange Award 2019 for her collaborative work supporting multicultural and non-Chinese speaking students, and she currently leads the project "Growth Made Easy: Effective Learning and Teaching of Chinese and Smooth Transition." This initiative, funded by the Education Bureau from 2019 to 2022 and continuously supported by the Quality Education Fund Thematic Network (QTN) for the school years from 2022 to 2026, aims to gear up teachers' professional capabilities in helping mainstream and multicultural students transition smoothly while providing system knowledge on effective Chinese language acquisition in Hong Kong. Previously, under the University-School Partnership Programmes funded by the Education Development Fund, she was the Principal Investigator for "Transition and Growth: Effective Learning and Teaching of Chinese for Multicultural Students (2017-2019)" and "Accommodating Diversity: Supporting the Learning and Teaching of Chinese Language for non-Chinese Speaking Students in Primary Schools (2014-2017)". Additionally, she served as the Co-investigator for the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS Hong Kong Project) across its 2011, 2016, and 2021 cycles. Moreover, Prof. Cheung, together with Prof. A. Lin Goodwin and Prof. Catherine KK Chan, collaboratively conducted ‘A Comparative Study of Learning Systems in Top-performing Jurisdictions’, initiated and supported by National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) during the period from 2019 to 2021. It studied the case of Hong Kong as one of the high-performing systems, to identify common features and underlying principles of the learning systems in five top-performing jurisdictions, on the one hand, and features unique to specific contexts, on the other.
