Prof. CHEONG Choo Mui (鍾竹梅) is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), serving within the Academic Unit of Language and Literacy Education. She is a prominent researcher in literacy development and was honored with the prestigious ARWA 2026 Mid-Career Award by the Association for Reading and Writing in Asia, recognizing her distinguished research record in Asian and cross-linguistic literacy acquisition. She also contributes internationally as a project team member for the PISA 2025 Hong Kong Project and PIRLS 2021 Hong Kong Project, lending her expertise specifically to the language literacy domain.Professor Cheong is the Project Leader of the flagship "Readbeyond" project, a major initiative designed to enhance students' self-directed learning by focusing on online reading competencies in Chinese across primary and secondary education. This impactful work was supported by the Quality Education Fund (QEF) and the Education Bureau from 2022 to 2025, and it has secured further funding from the QEF to continue running from 2026 to early 2028.Her broader research portfolio centers on Chinese language education, the reading-writing connection, integrated literacy skills, curriculum design, psycholinguistics, and large-scale assessments.
