Professor CHAN, Stephanie W. Y. (陳穎欣) is an Assistant Professor within the Academic Unit of Human Communication, Learning, and Development at the Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong (HKU). A highly trained developmental psychologist and early childhood scholar, she holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Early Childhood Education & Second Language Acquisition and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGDE) in Early Childhood Education from HKU. She additionally holds a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Research in Second Language Education from the University of Cambridge, UK, and a Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSc) in Psychology from HKU. Dr. Chan is a key member of the management committee for the Centre for Research in Early Childhood Education and Development (CORE) and is actively affiliated with the Centre for Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research (CACLER) at HKU. Her primary teaching and research expertise spans early childhood development and education, language and cognitive development of young children, executive functions, and first and second language acquisition. A hallmark of her impactful research is the development of the six-subtest Chinese Character Acquisition Assessment (CCAA), an evidence-based tool designed to measure multicultural kindergarteners’ abilities to form associations among the forms, sounds, and meanings of 40 Chinese characters. Proven to have adequate validity and reliability for assessing non-native kindergarteners, this assessment tool has been actively adopted across CACLER's QTN-G2 project over the past few years to directly assist teachers in tracking progress and adjusting pedagogical strategies to enhance the Chinese language skills of multicultural and Chinese learners. Her broader research agenda also systematically investigates socioeconomic gradients in early child literacy, child-level factors that mediate educational outcomes, and the interface of cognitive flexibilities with academic development.
